Blocked drains come in two levels of stubborn: the quick clear and the deep clean. Drain rods handle the first. High-pressure jetting handles the second. Knowing which one your drain actually needs saves you time, money, and a repeat callout.
Drain Rods: The Traditional Fix
Drain rods have cleared blockages for over a century, and they still work well. A plumber pushes flexible sections into the pipe and rotates them against the blockage. This breaks up loose debris like wipes, hair, or a build-up of leaves.
Rods are simple and cheap to use. They need no power source, so they work anywhere. However, they only reach so far, usually around 15 metres, and they can push debris further down the pipe instead of removing it. On an older pipe, an inexperienced hand with a rod can also crack a joint.
High-Pressure Jetting: The Deeper Clean
Jetting uses a flexible hose fitted with a nozzle that fires water forward and backward at once. The forward jets cut straight through the blockage. Meanwhile, the backward jets pull the hose along and flush debris back toward the access point.
Because the water pressure scours the whole pipe wall, jetting removes grease and scale that rods simply push past. As a result, the pipe stays clearer for longer afterward — worth knowing given Derby's own hard water pushes scale build-up inside pipes as well as taps and boilers. It also reaches much further down the run, which matters on longer domestic drains or a shared run between properties.
That said, jetting isn't always the right first move. On a pipe that's already cracked or badly corroded, high pressure can make a small problem worse. This is why a competent plumber checks the pipe's condition, often with a camera, before reaching for the jetter.
Which Method Should You Choose?
For a simple, visible blockage near the access point, rods are often enough and keep the job quick. For anything further down the line, for a recurring blockage, or for a drain coated in grease, jetting clears it properly instead of just moving the problem along. In short: rods for the easy jobs, jetting for the stubborn ones.
Either way, at Emergency Plumbers Derby we agree the price before any tool touches your drain, and we're available 24/7 for genuine blockage emergencies. There's no call-out fee to worry about on top of that.
Where We Cover This
We run both methods right across Derbyshire, and the right choice often depends on the local housing stock. In Derby, our drain jetting service deals constantly with the narrow, ageing pipework under the city's Victorian terraces, where scale build-up is common. Long Eaton's dense Victorian terraced housing throws up similar problems, which is why our jetting team covering Long Eaton sees plenty of grease-related callouts.
Over in Burton upon Trent, riverside brewery-worker terraces sit on some of the oldest drainage in the area. Our Burton upon Trent drain jetting cover reflects that history. Belper's Derwent Valley mill heritage means plenty of period pipework too, so our drain jetting work in Belper often finds decades of scale rather than one simple blockage.
Ilkeston's Victorian and mining-era terraces bring similar age-related buildup, and our Ilkeston jetting crew treats that as routine work. Ashbourne is different again: its Georgian town houses often have longer, more awkward drain runs, and that's exactly where the reach of our Ashbourne drain jetting service earns its keep over a rod.
Ripley and Heanor both grew up during the mining era, and their narrow, ageing pipe runs need the same careful approach. Our jetting cover in Ripley and our drain jetting service for Heanor both handle that pattern regularly. Finally, Duffield's period stone houses near the Derwent tend to have older lateral connections, so our Duffield drain jetting team usually inspects before clearing anything.
When Jetting Uncovers a Bigger Problem
Sometimes jetting reveals damage that rodding would never have shown you: a collapsed section, root intrusion, or a crack letting water escape into the ground. When that happens, clearing the blockage is only half the job. The pipe itself still needs fixing before the problem comes back.
That's where our repair teams take over. We handle everything from a straightforward patch to full pipe relining, which avoids digging up a drive or garden in most cases. Our drain repairs service in Derby sees this often on the city's older terraced streets. The same pattern shows up for our Burton upon Trent drain repairs team, our drain repairs cover in Belper, and our Ilkeston drain repairs service.
In Ripley and Heanor, the mining-era pipework means damage sometimes turns up mid-jet rather than before it starts. Our Ripley drain repairs team and Heanor drain repairs service are used to picking up the job straight after a clearance. The same follow-on repair cover extends to Ashbourne, Long Eaton and Duffield too, wherever jetting reveals a pipe that needs fixing rather than just clearing.
If you're not sure which method your drain needs, that's fine. We'll assess it on site and agree the price before starting any work. You can request a quote online any time, day or night — see our Duffield area page for everything else we cover nearby.
